When you can use it
- Full 1/3 discount:
- Weekends and Bank Holidays (anytime)
- Monday-Friday after 10am
- Before 10am on weekdays:
- The Railcard is valid but has a £12 minimum fare
- Fares discounted below £12 won’t be valid before 10am
- Exceptions: There’s no minimum fare or time restriction for Advance tickets, or during July and August

Where it’s valid
- All National Rail services across Britain – perfect for long-distance trips or hopping between uni and home.
- London Underground (Tube) and DLR in some cases, for example if you’re crossing London on a longer journey or buying a London Travelcard.
- Can be applied to an Oyster card for cheaper off-peak journeys around London on National Rail, Underground and DLR services. See here for full details.
Who it’s for
- Anyone aged 16–25 at the time of purchase
- You don’t have to be a UK resident – visitors can get one too.
- You just need proof of age, e.g. a driving licence or passport.
- Students aged 26+
- You can also get a 1-year 16-25 Railcard if you’re studying full time. You’ll need proof of student status (at least 15 hours of studying per week, 20 weeks per year).
- Please note: these applications are reviewed manually so will take longer to process.
- Expiry:
- Once you’ve bought your 16-25 Railcard, you can still use it if you turn 26 before it expires.
- You can buy a 3-year Railcard until the day before your 24th birthday, and a 1-year Railcard until the day before your 26th birthday.
- You can continue getting discounts after you turn 26, with a 26-30 Railcard.
- The 16-25 Railcard only covers the named cardholder, and you’ll have to provide a clear photo. If you want to get a discount when travelling with family or friends, why not take a look at the other Railcards you can get?
What fares it discounts
- Yes (1/3 off):
- Standard class Anytime, Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets, including Day Travelcards for London, and equivalent tickets like Evening Out or Sunday Out
- Standard and first class Advance tickets
- Most Ranger tickets and Rover tickets (e.g. All Line Rover, Thames Branches Day Ranger)
- PlusBus tickets for local bus travel
- No:
- Season tickets (weekly, monthly, annual or Flexi Seasons)
- Eurostar or heritage railway services
- Underground and DLR (except in the specific circumstances mentioned above)
