16-17 Railcard (16-17 Saver)
Get 50% off most train fares, including season tickets! Perfect for commuting and day trips.
Cost: £35 per year
Average savings: £406 per year
When it’s valid
- Anytime, on any day of the week – including peak times. No minimum fares or time restrictions.
Where it works
- National Rail services across England and Wales
- In Scotland: LNER, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express and Lumo trains – but not ScotRail or Caledonian Sleeper
- If you live in Scotland: Consider a Young Scot NEC or a 16-25 Railcard instead
- London Underground (Tube) and DLR in some cases, e.g. longer journeys crossing London
- If you mainly travel in London: Consider a 16+ Zip Oyster photocard for free or discounted travel. You can’t apply a 16-17 Saver to an Oyster card – though you can with a 16-25 Railcard.
Who it’s for
- Anyone aged 16-17 at the time of purchase, including non-UK residents. You just need proof of age, e.g. a driving licence or passport.
- The Railcard lasts for one year or until your 18th birthday (whichever comes first). You can continue getting discounts with a 16-25 Railcard.
- Your card will show two dates – the normal expiry date (which applies to single/return tickets) and a “Season ticket valid until” date that runs four months beyond the Railcard’s expiry date. During that time, you can continue to use any season ticket you bought whilst your Railcard was valid. See the 16-17 Saver FAQs for more details on this.
- The 16-17 Saver only covers the named cardholder, and you’ll have to provide a clear photo. If you want to get a discount when travelling with family or friends, why not take a look at the other Railcards you can get?
