General Questions

How much luggage can I take on the train?

You can take up to three items of luggage with you on the train. However, you should only take as much with you as you’re reasonably able to handle yourself – station staff can’t assist you with your luggage. Bulky items such as furniture shouldn’t exceed 30x70x90cm.

Different rules apply on trains operated by Hull Trains and Lumo. For Hull Trains, you are allowed one large suitcase (30x70x90cm) and a small cabin-style carry on bag in the luggage racks. In addition you can take a small item (e.g. backpack or purse) that fits under your seat or on a coat hook.

For Lumo, you are allowed one medium-sized suitcase (63x41x27cm) in the overhead racks and one small bag, rucksack or holdall (under the seat in front).

Some GWR trains have restrictions on carrying surfboards during the summer.

For more detailed information, please see this page.

Can I take my bike on the train?

Generally, yes. However, each train company sets their own cycle policy. Commuter trains usually have restrictions on carrying non-folding bikes at weekday peak times, and most long distance operators require you to make a bike reservation before you travel. Lumo do not carry non-folding bikes.

Folded bikes (such as Brompton bikes) can usually be carried at any time of day without a reservation. They are treated as one of your items of luggage, so they should be stowed above your seat or in a luggage rack.

You can look up the exact bike policy for each operator here.

Can I take my pet on the train?

Generally, yes. Most train companies allow you to take up to two dogs, or other small domestic animals, with you on the train at no extra cost. When travelling with dogs, they should not occupy a seat and should remain on the floor next to you, without obstructing the aisle.

When taking other pets on trains, they should be enclosed in a basket or a pet carrier. The size of this shouldn’t exceed 85×60×60cm. Please be aware that you are fully responsible for any pets that you choose to bring along on your journey, so they shouldn’t interfere with the comfort of safety of your fellow passengers.

For full details, please see this page.

What if I’m travelling with an assistance animal? Passenger Assist teams will be able to book an additional seat for you, in order to give your assistance dog or other animal the necessary floor space to help you on your journey. Please note that Ticketyboo is unable to reserve additional seats directly – please contact Passenger Assist.

How many people can I buy tickets for at once?

You can buy train tickets for up to 9 people in a single transaction. If you want to buy tickets for a larger group, you’ll need to do this in separate transactions.

There are several discounts available when you travel together – have a look at our Discounts and Railcards FAQ page for more information.

Most train companies offer special rates on bookings for large groups (10+ people); unfortunately we can’t offer you these. You’ll want to contact the relevant Group Travel department for more information.
