Delay Repay
If your train’s delayed, you shouldn’t be out of pocket and that’s where Delay Repay comes in and the 15-minute rule.
The 15-minute rule…
If your train is 15 minutes late when you arrive at your destination you can claim compensation, regardless of the cause of the delay. It’s called Delay Repay and it’s a scheme the majority of UK train companies uses to compensate you for unexpected delays and/or cancellations. Delay Repay is a fair and almost-uniform approach to compensation. Some train companies operate a scheme where a delay of 30-60 minutes triggers compensation (see below for participating companies and their delay thresholds).
How much can you claim?
Many train operators using Delay Repay now give back 25% of your ticket price (or the portion covering that part of the trip on a return ticket) when your journey is delayed between 15-29 minutes. A few operators that haven’t adopted Delay Repay require delays of an hour or more before compensation kicks in.
How to claim your compensation
1
Keep your ticket. This is essential, whether paper or digital, for making a claim. You’ll need to submit it as proof of your journey.
2
Submit your claim. Visit the train operator’s website to fill out a Delay Repay claim form. You’ll need details of your journey, including the date, time and the duration of the delay.
3
Choose your method of compensation. Typically, you can receive compensation in the form of a bank transfer, cheque or rail vouchers. Some operators also offer digital vouchers.
4
DON’T DELAY! Each operator has a time limit for accepting claims, although it’s usually within 28 days of the delayed journey.
